To study full time at a US university or college, Moroccan students need an F-1 visa. Everything starts with the Form I-20 issued by your school, and the decision is taken at a consular interview in Morocco.

Key takeaways

  • Your school issues the Form I-20 after admission and proof of funding.
  • You pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, fill in the DS-160 and pay the visa fee before booking the interview.
  • The interview takes place at the US Embassy in Rabat or the Consulate General in Casablanca.
  • You must show a credible study plan, sufficient funds and your intention to respect the visa.

The steps of the F-1 visa

  1. Receive your admission and Form I-20 from a SEVP-certified school.
  2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online and keep the receipt.
  3. Fill in the DS-160 online visa application.
  4. Pay the visa application fee and book your interview.
  5. Attend the interview with all your documents.
  6. Travel no earlier than the date allowed before the program start shown on your I-20.

Documents to bring to the interview

  • A valid passport and the DS-160 confirmation page.
  • The signed Form I-20 and the SEVIS fee receipt.
  • The visa fee receipt and the appointment confirmation.
  • Proof of funding: bank statements, sponsor letters, scholarship letters.
  • Transcripts, diplomas and test scores such as the TOEFL or SAT.

How to prepare the interview

The interview is short. The consular officer wants to understand why you chose this program and this school, how your studies are financed and what you plan to do afterwards. Answer clearly, in English, with your own words, and make sure your answers match your documents.

Common reasons for refusal

  • Financial documents that are incomplete, too recent or inconsistent with the declared sponsor.
  • A study project that is hard to follow: a program with no link to previous studies, or vague career plans.
  • Missing translations or documents that do not match each other (names, dates, amounts).
  • Applying too late, so that the appointment or the decision comes after the start of classes.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the F-1 interview take place in Morocco?

At the US Embassy in Rabat or the US Consulate General in Casablanca, according to the appointment you book. Follow the instructions on the official visa appointment website.

Can I work in the United States on an F-1 visa?

Work is very limited: mainly on-campus jobs, and training linked to your studies under strict conditions. Your funding must not depend on work.

What if my visa is refused?

Read the reason given, fix what was missing (funding, project, ties) and reapply only when your situation has really changed or your file is clearer.
