Why study in Spain?

Many Moroccan families look at Spain for its proximity: travel between the two countries is short, which makes visits home and the first months abroad easier.

Spanish universities follow the European Higher Education Area structure, so a Grado or a Máster from Spain is built on the same credit system (ECTS) as other European degrees.

Students can choose between public universities, where tuition is set by each region, and private universities, which have their own admission process and fees.

Spanish is also a widely spoken international language, and learning it during your studies is an asset for your career.

The Spanish higher education system

University degrees follow three cycles, alongside higher vocational training.

Grado

The bachelor's degree, typically completed in four years (240 ECTS credits).

Máster

A postgraduate degree of one to two years, depending on the program.

Doctorado

A research degree prepared after the Máster, usually over several years.

Higher vocational training

Formación Profesional de Grado Superior: practical two-year programs linked to a profession.

Language requirements

Most Grado programs at public universities are taught in Spanish. Universities usually ask for proof of Spanish level, for example the DELE diploma or the SIELE certificate, often at B1 or B2 depending on the program.

For programs taught in English, mostly at Máster level and in some private universities, a test such as IELTS or TOEFL is usually required.

Student visa overview

Once admitted, students apply for a student stay visa (visado de estudios) at the Spanish consulate competent for their place of residence in Morocco. The file generally includes the admission letter, proof of sufficient financial means, health insurance and a valid passport.

If the stay is longer than six months, the student then applies in Spain for a foreigner identity card (TIE) shortly after arrival.

Studying in Spain: your questions

Answers to the questions Moroccan students and parents ask us about Spain.

Often, yes, for Grado programs. Many Spanish universities ask international students to accredit their secondary diploma through UNEDasiss or to obtain its recognition (homologación) before final enrolment. The exact requirement depends on the university and the program, so it should be checked early, because these procedures take time.

For most Grado programs at public universities, yes. Teaching is mainly in Spanish, and universities usually ask for a certificate such as the DELE or the SIELE. Some Máster programs and private universities teach in English and ask for IELTS or TOEFL instead. Even then, basic Spanish makes daily life and student jobs much easier.

International students with a valid student authorisation can generally work part time in Spain, within a weekly limit of hours set by the regulations, as long as the job is compatible with their studies. A student job can help with daily costs, but the visa file must show sufficient financial means from the start.

ProTrain helps you choose realistic programs in Spain, understand which diploma recognition step applies to you, prepare your applications and organise the student visa file. If your program is taught in English, we also prepare you for IELTS or TOEFL. Parents are kept informed at each step, and we meet you in our Guéliz office in Marrakech or online.
