Why study in Finland?

  • Hundreds of programs taught in English, at bachelor's and master's level, in universities and universities of applied sciences.
  • A reputation for quality: an education system known worldwide, with small groups and close contact with teachers.
  • Strong fields: technology, computer science, engineering, business, design, health and education.
  • A residence permit for the whole degree, with the right to work part-time during studies and to stay to look for a job afterwards.
  • Scholarships from the universities for non-EU students, often covering part of the tuition fees in the first year.
  • A safe and well-organised country, with student housing, student discounts and a high quality of life.

The Finnish higher education system

Two types of institutions: universities, focused on research, and universities of applied sciences (UAS), focused on professional practice.

University bachelor's

Three years (180 ECTS credits), usually followed by a master's degree.

UAS bachelor's

Three and a half to four years (210 to 240 ECTS credits), with a work placement, in a university of applied sciences.

Master's degree

Two years (120 ECTS credits) at a university; a UAS master's also requires work experience after the bachelor's.

Doctorate

A research degree of about four years after the master's degree, usually without tuition fees.

Typical admission steps from Morocco

Most applications go through the national Studyinfo portal, during a joint application period at the start of the year.

1

Choose your programs

Compare universities and universities of applied sciences on Studyinfo, and note the application period of each program: joint application in January, or separate applications in the autumn.

2

Apply online

Baccalaureate or diploma, transcripts, passport, English certificate and, depending on the program, a motivation letter, an entrance exam, an SAT score or a portfolio.

3

Admission and tuition

Accept your study place before the deadline, apply for the university's scholarship if offered, and pay the tuition fees to receive the confirmation needed for the permit.

4

Residence permit

Apply online to the Finnish Immigration Service with proof of funds and health insurance, then prove your identity at the Finnish embassy or its visa centre.

Language requirements

Programs taught in English ask for proof of English, usually an IELTS or TOEFL score, sometimes a Cambridge or PTE certificate, with minimum scores set by each institution. Finnish and Swedish, the two national languages, are needed only for programs taught in those languages, but learning Finnish is a real advantage for internships and jobs. ProTrain prepares students for IELTS and TOEFL in Marrakech.

Residence permit overview

Students from Morocco need a residence permit for studies, applied for online with the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) once admitted. The file includes the admission letter, proof of tuition payment or scholarship, proof of funds for living costs, health insurance and a passport. The permit is granted for the whole duration of the degree, and the application fee and amounts required change regularly.

Studying in Finland: your questions

Answers to the questions Moroccan students and parents ask us about Finland.

No. Bachelor's and master's programs taught in English charge tuition fees to students from outside the European Union, and the amount depends on the institution and the program. Most institutions offer scholarships to non-EU students, often a partial reduction of the fees in the first year that can be renewed on academic results. Doctoral studies generally have no tuition fees.

Most English-taught programs starting in the autumn take applications during the joint application period in January, on the Studyinfo portal. Some programs run separate applications, often in the autumn or early winter, and a few have a second intake in January. Results arrive in the spring, which leaves time for the residence permit. Dates change every year, so plan your language test and documents well before the application period opens.

A residence permit for studies, not a visa. You apply online to the Finnish Immigration Service after admission, with the admission letter, proof that the tuition fees are paid or covered by a scholarship, proof of funds for your living costs, health insurance and your passport, then visit the Finnish embassy or its visa centre to prove your identity. The permit now covers the whole duration of your degree, allows part-time work and can be extended after graduation to look for a job.

ProTrain helps you choose between universities and universities of applied sciences, check the admission requirements and application periods of each program, and prepare your Studyinfo application and motivation letter. We prepare you for IELTS or TOEFL, then help you build the residence permit file, including proof of funds and insurance. Parents are kept informed, and we meet you in Guéliz, Marrakech, or online.
