Studying in China from Morocco: programs, scholarships and X1 visa
ProTrain

Studying in China from Morocco has become a serious option for students interested in medicine, engineering or business, with programs taught in Chinese or in English and scholarships for international students. The route has its own logic: choose the program and language, prepare a precise admission file, receive the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 form, then apply for the X1 student visa.

Key takeaways

  • Chinese universities offer programs in Chinese and in English, with medicine, engineering and business among the common choices.
  • Many students start with a Chinese language year before their degree program.
  • The HSK is the standard Chinese proficiency test for programs taught in Chinese.
  • Scholarships exist, including the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and university scholarships, but they are competitive.
  • For studies longer than 180 days, you need an X1 visa, then a residence permit after arrival.

Which programs to choose: Chinese-taught or English-taught?

Chinese universities offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs, as well as non-degree language programs. Programs taught in Chinese give access to the widest choice of subjects and are often less expensive, but they require a good HSK level. English-taught programs are available in fields such as medicine, engineering, international business and economics.

For medicine, check carefully that the university is authorized to teach the program in English to international students, and find out in advance about the recognition of the diploma in Morocco if you plan to practice there. This step protects you from a costly surprise after several years of study.

Why start with a Chinese language year?

A common route for Moroccan students is to spend a first year learning Chinese at the university, then enter a degree program taught in Chinese. This year helps you reach the HSK level required by your faculty and adapt to life in China before starting your main studies.

Even in an English-taught program, basic Chinese makes a big difference for shopping, transport, administration and making friends. Many universities include Chinese classes in English-taught programs.

HSK: the Chinese proficiency test

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) measures Chinese language proficiency at several levels. Universities set the level required for each program, and the requirement is usually higher for degree programs than for language programs. Registration, dates and test centers are published on the official Chinese Testing website.

For English-taught programs, universities may ask for an English test such as IELTS or TOEFL, or accept another proof of English level. Check the program page and plan your preparation with our test preparation service.

Scholarships: CSC and university scholarships

The Chinese Government Scholarship, managed by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), can cover tuition, accommodation and a living allowance depending on the category. Some Chinese universities and local governments also offer their own scholarships.

These scholarships are competitive and have their own calendars and application channels, sometimes through the Chinese embassy, sometimes directly through the university. Prepare your file early, apply to several options, and always keep a financial plan in case the scholarship is not awarded.

Admission documents: what to prepare in Morocco

Each university publishes its own list, but the following documents are commonly required. Start collecting them several months before the deadlines.

  • A valid passport, with enough validity for your study period.
  • Your highest diploma and transcripts, notarized and translated into Chinese or English as requested.
  • A study plan or motivation letter, and often one or two recommendation letters.
  • The Foreigner Physical Examination Form, commonly required, completed by a doctor with the requested tests.
  • A certificate of no criminal record for some universities or programs.
  • Proof of language level (HSK, IELTS or TOEFL) and proof of funds when requested.

Moroccan documents often need legalization or certification. Check with the university, and with the Chinese embassy where relevant, which certification is accepted before you start the process.

Admission notice, JW202 form and X1 visa

Once admitted, the university sends you an admission notice and a visa application form for study in China: the JW201 for scholarship students, or the JW202 for self-funded students. These originals are essential for the visa.

  1. Receive the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 form.
  2. Prepare the visa file: passport, photos, application form, admission notice, JW form and physical examination form when required.
  3. Apply for the X1 visa, used for studies longer than 180 days, through the Chinese embassy or consulate, following their current procedure.
  4. After arrival, apply for the residence permit within the required period, with the help of your university's international office.

For short programs of 180 days or less, a different visa category usually applies. Your university will tell you which one matches your program.

Daily life in China: what to expect

Daily life in China relies heavily on mobile apps. Messaging and mobile payment apps are used almost everywhere, so set them up quickly with your university's guidance. Some foreign websites and apps are not accessible in China, so prepare your tools and contacts before departure.

Climate varies a lot between cities: northern cities have cold, dry winters, while the south is hot and humid for a large part of the year. Take this into account when choosing your city, and pack accordingly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing an English-taught medicine program without checking authorization and recognition in Morocco.
  • Underestimating the time needed to notarize, translate and certify documents.
  • Counting only on a CSC scholarship without a backup plan.
  • Applying for the wrong visa category for a long program.
  • Missing the deadline to apply for the residence permit after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study in China without speaking Chinese?

Yes, many programs are taught in English. Learning basic Chinese is still strongly recommended for daily life and internships.

Is the CSC scholarship open to Moroccan students?

The Chinese Government Scholarship is open to international students, including Moroccans, through different channels. Places are limited and competitive, so check the current call on the official channels and with the university.

What is the difference between JW201 and JW202?

The JW201 form is issued to scholarship students, and the JW202 to self-funded students. Both are used with the admission notice to apply for the student visa.

Do I need a medical check?

For long programs, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form is commonly required. Follow the instructions of your university, which may also ask for a check-up after arrival.

When should we start preparing?

Ideally 10 to 12 months before the start of the program, and earlier if you are applying for a scholarship. Document certification and translation often take longer than expected.
